PANIC ATTACKS

Panic attacks

THE SYMPTOMS

i) A choking sensation

ii) Feeling nauseous

iii) Your heart start racing

iv) A churning in your stomach

v) Experiencing hot or cold sweats

vi) Pains in your chest

vii) Hearing a ringing in your ears

viii)You start Hyperventilating

ix) A fear that you are going mad or having a heart attack

x) Feeling of impending doom

HOW TO COPE

i) Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other talking therapies can be very effective. This works by helping the sufferer to change long-held beliefs and behaviour. Speak to your GP about being referred.

ii) Anti-depressant medication helps some sufferers- a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can help to reduce anxiety.

iii) Learning relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation and hypnotherapy is also effective.

iv)Diet can make a difference, especailly cutting caffeine which increases anxiety.
